I've long been a fan of my friend and colleague Somsara Rielly's graphic design and just in time for Mother's Day she's reimagined the iconic Mad Men title sequence.
Watch it HERE and check out Somsara's website for more of her amazing work.
More from Somsara in her own words:
I've long had this idea for a reimagining of the title sequence for Mad Men from the female perspective, but the “getting it done” took some doing.
After a recent rewatch of the entire series (which IMHO is one of the best of all time) I was struck again by how re-watching a great show (16 years later!) really hits different. I believe this is the case with great art—it means different things at different points in one’s life, and at this point in particular, really got me thinking deeply about the Mad Women—then and now.
The original Mad Men opening titles (that we never skipped, amazing interview with the creators here) also got me wondering how in this golden age of title sequences, so many of them now feel the same post Game of Thrones.
Stop-motion as you can imagine is a slow process. Along with the push and pull of lots of ideas, limited time, wanting to learn new skills and get better, and also have a life outside of a dark studio, finding time to experiment and make new work is a challenge. With all the increased demands on our time I found myself asking how do we – how do *I* – find time for the truly deep creative-play part of myself that makes me get out of bed in the morning?
It turns out that for me, getting out of bed earlier in the morning has been the solution.
Having a project that is purely for ME, that idea that I just can’t shake doing, can actually turn out to be THE thing that gets me out of bed in the morning. Even if it’s really early. And cold. And dark out. I found myself so excited to work on my own new projects that I was waking up before the early alarm (horrifying I know.)
Today I am really excited to share the first of my 5:30am projects: a title sequence called MAD WOMEN - inspired by the original - but from a very different point of view. I loved making this, and if you have a project with animation needs (title credits, interstitials, promotional content, etc.), I'd happily be up at 5:30 for you, too!
