Why Summer Changes the Way We Think About Home

Why Summer Changes the Way We Think About Home

If you live in Seattle, you know that June is often affectionately called “Junuary.” Cool mornings, gray skies, and the occasional drizzle are all part of the deal. This year certainly lived up to the name. Then, almost on cue, summer arrived on July 5th.

When it does, everything changes. Windows stay open. Dinner moves outside. We linger on the deck a little longer and notice the evening light streaming through our homes. Summer invites us to experience home differently.

Summer Is When Modern Homes Shine

If there’s one season that captures the spirit of modern architecture in Seattle, it’s summer.

One of the defining principles of Mid-Century Modern design is the seamless connection between indoors and outdoors. Floor-to-ceiling glass, sliding walls, generous decks, covered patios, and carefully framed views weren’t simply aesthetic choices—they were designed to make nature part of everyday living.

During the summer months, that philosophy comes to life.

The living room extends onto the deck. Dinner moves outside. Friends gather around the fire pit long after sunset. A wall of glass stays open, and suddenly the boundaries between home and landscape begin to disappear.

Whether it’s an original Northwest Mid-Century Modern home or a contemporary residence inspired by the same principles, some of Seattle’s most memorable homes share one defining characteristic: they blur the line between inside and out.

They’re designed not just to be admired—but to be experienced.

It’s Less About the Market Than You Might Think

People often assume buying or selling begins with interest rates, inventory, or home prices.

Those factors certainly matter.

But in my experience, the biggest catalyst is much more personal.

Maybe you’ve realized you’d spend more time outside if you had a larger deck or a better backyard. Maybe you want more natural light throughout the day. Maybe your home no longer reflects the way you live today.

Those aren’t market decisions.

They’re life decisions.

And recognizing them is often the first step toward making a thoughtful real estate decision.

Summer Is a Great Time to Observe

If you’re wondering whether your next move is around the corner, don’t start by scrolling listings.

Start by paying attention.

Where do you naturally spend your time?

What spaces work beautifully?

What do you wish your home did differently?

Sometimes the answers are surprisingly simple. Sometimes they reveal that it’s time for a change. Either way, summer has a way of bringing those answers into focus.

You Don’t Have to Be Ready to Move

One of the biggest misconceptions about working with a real estate professional is that you need to be ready to buy or sell immediately.

You don’t.

Some of the best conversations happen months before a move is ever on the calendar. Exploring neighborhoods, understanding today’s Seattle market, or simply talking through possibilities can make future decisions feel far less overwhelming.

Summer gives us a chance to slow down and appreciate where we are.

Sometimes it also helps us imagine where we’d like to be next.

☎️ Thinking about your next chapter? Whether you’re considering a move this year or simply curious about what’s possible, I’m always happy to have a conversation.
